The King's Child

The Duke of Windsor, the uncrowned King Edward VIII, abdicated the British throne in 1936 amidst great scandal. Later in life he recalled his boyhood as the Prince of Wales. He said: ‘My father [King George V] was a strict disciplinarian. Sometimes when I had done something wrong, he would admonish me saying, “My dear boy, you must always remember who you are.”’

It must have been incredibly hard for Edward. Imagine having to cope with the King’s displeasure (even if he is your Dad) every time you messed up. Imagine having to deal with the expectations of an onlooking world without ever having a day off. What a weight of responsibility Edward must have felt, knowing that one day he would be heir to his father’s kingdom, with his own regal rights and responsibilities. Imagine being the child of a king.

Here is an amazing truth. We who call Jesus Lord, who know the forgiveness of sins, are children not of any king but of the King of Kings. In Romans 8 the Apostle Paul draws out the implications of this great truth; ‘Now if we are children, then we are heirs – heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ’ (Rom 8:17).

Just like King George V, our Heavenly Father who reigns over all says to us every day, ‘My dear child, you must always remember who you are’. We are a child of the King of Kings, with all the associated joys and responsibilities. Let’s never forget who we are. Let’s be people who walk in the Light.
