Have you taken any risks lately? I hope you have. If you’re busy eliminating risk from your life, then chances are that you’re spending a lot of time stunting your growth and avoiding new experiences. Just as a growing infant needs to let go of the coffee table and risk falling if it is ever to learn to walk, so we too sometimes need to let go of our securities and risk stumbling into new experiences if we are to grow.

Spend some time reflecting on your life. What risks are you taking? What risks are you prepared to take? If you want to grow, and we should all be growing in grace and godliness, then you will have to take some risks.

This might mean confessing sin to someone whom you have hurt and asking for forgiveness. It might mean sharing what Jesus means to you with your neighbour and inviting them to church or to read the Bible with you. It might mean committing wholeheartedly to a ministry for which you know you will need God’s special enabling. It might mean plucking up your courage and asking that heartthrob out for a date.

And what about our church? Can we (more importantly, should we) seek a risk-free existence? Take a look at church life in the New Testament. It was anything but risk free.

The Christian life should be the most joyful, risk taking life imaginable because we walk by faith and not by sight. Read Psalm 121 and take a risk today for the glory of God. Be confident knowing that, the Lord watches over us-- the Lord is our shade at our right hand…He will watch over our coming and going both now and forevermore (Ps 121:5, 8).
