Born again

By Pastor John - Senior Pastor

When I was a child I learnt a simple little song at Sunday School that I suspect no one sings any more.

Just like Nicodemus you must be born again,

Just like Nicodemus you must be born again,

He came to God by nighttime,

For you this is the right time,

Just like Nicodemus you must be born again.

I’m sure I learnt other songs at Sunday school that are now long forgotten, but for some reason this simple little ditty has often run around and around in my head. Why the person who wrote the song thought that ‘night-time is the right time’ is beyond me. Nevertheless, despite that minor detail, this simple little song contains a great truth that I have been aware of ever since I first sang it. It’s basic. You, me, everyone, young, old, rich, poor; we must be born again.

Nicodemus was a religious ruler, respected throughout Israel. Yet despite his credentials, Jesus said that Nicodemus needed much more than knowledge about God. He needed a new start from God. He needed God’s Spirit to come and give him new life, spiritual life. In short, Nicodemus needed to be born again.

And, as the song reminds us, Just like Nicodemus, you must be born again. ‘Born Again Christianity’ may sound American, it may sound extreme, but at heart it is biblical. We need God’s Spirit to come and create new life in us. Without Him we are lost. Let’s pray that our church family would shine as a lighthouse in our city as we share the Word of Life, and that many might come to experience what it means to truly be born again.
