Choices

Every day we face a multitude of choices. Most of them are relatively insignificant. But every now and then we are forced to make a ‘big’ decision where the weight of our choice falls heavily upon our soul. When this happens, most believers commit their decision to the Lord in prayer as they seek his help and guidance.
But are our ‘big’ life choices really our most ‘important’ life choices? I think not. Far more important are the ‘small’ choices, related to faith and righteousness, that we make every day as we navigate the turbulent waters of life.
For example, the Bible instructs Christians to be thankful for ‘we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken (Heb 12:28). Thankfulness is a daily choice. It is a choice we can make when we wake up and greet the new day. It’s a choice we can make when we are stuck in traffic or feeling lonely. It is a choice we can make as we slow down and draw the covers up to our head each night as we get into bed.
Praise the Lord! We are part of his wonderful creation. In Christ our sins are forgiven and our future secure. Every day the choice is ours. The God-fearing person will ‘rejoice always, pray continually, and give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for us in Christ Jesus’ (1 Thes 5:16-18).
Just as you pray for the big things in life, make a habit to pray daily for the small choices that lead you either towards God, or away from him. Small choices inevitably grow, one upon the other. Small choices form our character, they reflect our likeness to Christ, and that is much more significant than the choice of whether to study economics rather than physics.
