Can we change

The prophet Jeremiah laments, ‘Can the Ethiopian change his skin or the leopard its spots? Neither can you do good who are accustomed to doing evil’ (Jer 13:23). Sin entraps us. Occasional moral failures rapidly spiral into destructive and hurtful habits. Each of us struggles with weaknesses of character that seem to be deeply embedded into our nature. One person has an ongoing battle with arrogance and greed, whilst another is weighed down by gossip and envy. Can we ever change?

Don’t be discouraged. Don’t give up hope. What is impossible for us is possible for God. The Lord who changed water into wine can work remarkable change in our lives. He has a good track record, and he is still at work.

Jesus changed the Apostle Paul from being a violent persecutor of Christians into the faithful servant he used to take the gospel to the Gentiles. Jesus changed John Newton from being a lawless slave trader into a godly pastor and writer of the hymn, Amazing Grace.

Sometimes, like the Apostle Paul and John Newton, God works dramatic change in people’s lives. But every day, God is at work progressively, by his Spirit, transforming his children into the likeness of his image. However it happens, whether dramatic or gradual, the change Jesus brings is no less real, and no less remarkable.

Can a leopard change its spots? Yes, but only if God changes them. Can you change your life and turn from habitual sin? Yes! All you need is a resolute faith in Jesus and a commitment to serve him as Lord. Keep trusting Jesus.
