War and Peace

Talks continue in Egypt over an ‘immanent’ peace deal between Israel and the Palestinians. This conflict has been ongoing for over two years. More than two years to reach a peace deal! And what sort of lasting peace will it bring? Meanwhile, 2000km to the north, Ukraine and Russia have been at war for over three and half years. Death estimates are somewhere in the range of 170,000 to 1,000,000 people. In other words, we don’t really know. What we do know is that many people are being killed every day.

War should disturb us. So much effort and expense is directed towards destruction. Peace is fractured. Innocent lives are threatened. Nation rises up against nation and so often the small and insignificant are caught in the crossfire. We live in a fallen world. We long for a better world.

As Christians we must never lose hope in God’s goodness and sovereign reign. This side of heaven we struggle to understand why our Lord allows such calamities to occur. However, we must not forget his promises. One day, we can rest assured, nations will ‘beat their swords into ploughshares and their spears into pruning hooks. Nation will not take up sword against nation, nor will they train for war any more’ (Mic 4:3). One-day war will be no more.

We look forward to God’s eternal kingdom where there will be no sin, and so no war or pain or crying. We live in uncertain times, and this uncertainty will continue until Jesus returns. So, let’s keep our eyes on glory and find our rest in the promises of God.
