Trust and Obey
For there’s no other way
To be happy in Jesus,
Than to Trust and Obey
This old hymn chorus can be used as a response song to almost any sermon. ‘Trust and Obey’ expresses the Christian’s best response to the goodness of God.
We never reach a level of maturity that allows us to stop trusting God. In fact, as we grow in Christ, we become increasingly aware of our total and utter dependence upon him for all things – we need to trust him more and more.
The maturing also Christian grows in their willingness to obey God. A greater sense of God’s holiness fills their consciousness, as they come to realise that God does, in fact, know what’s best for them. Obedience to God is a sincere expression of our trust in God.
But perhaps the best indication of our willingness to trust and obey God can be found by examining the depth and sincerity of our prayer life. Prayer acknowledges that God is almighty and that we are totally dependent upon his sovereign knowledge and power. If we hope to be a church that lives with ‘faith for the future’, then we need to express that through our prayer life. .
So, we pray in our church services. We pray at online prayer meetings. We pray in our small groups. We pray in pairs. We pray at home. We pray. What a glorious privilege we enjoy in being able to approach our holy, living God and put our trust in him. Trust and obey. He has promised to provide shelter for those who seek refuge under his wings.
