Sweet Fruit

By Pastor John Macindoe - Senior Pastor

Our neighbor has a passion fruit vine that has grown up and spilled over into our yard. It receives lots of water from our place and, with roots running into our yard, some top up fertilizer courtesy of our dogs. So, I’ve had no reluctance harvesting the passion fruit that grows on our side of the fence.

And this year we’ve had a bumper crop. Lots and lots of passion fruit. Some are sweet and delicious. Others, a touch on the tart side. And still others … well they’re inedible.

But it’s all been worthwhile. Levi, my grandson, and I love a good passion fruit and this year we’ve been feasting. While I’m at it, Levi and I also love good cherries, sweet oranges, nectarines, peaches, plums, apricots, lychees, mangoes and grapes. Where do I stop! Life is good.

I may well rejoice in the joy of sweet, ripe fruit but God’s Word reminds me that not even the sweetness of ripe summer fruits can compare with the blessings he promises those who trust his Word. The Psalmist writes, ‘How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth. They are much more precious than gold, than much pure gold, they are sweeter than honey, than honey from the comb’ (Ps 119:103 & 19:10).

Let me encourage you to set aside regular time for Bible reading and prayer. Start by asking the Holy Spirit to teach you from God’s Word and give you a heart willing to obey. You will be sure to find that the story of salvation contained in the Bible (forgiveness of sins and hope for eternity) is true refreshment for a weary and anxious soul.
