Finishing The Race

I have never won a fun run. Truth be told, I’ve never won any running race. I’m too slow. Does this make me a loser? Well, I guess it depends upon your perspective. Very few people enter a fun run, or choose to run a marathon, to win. The objective for most is simply to finish the race and enjoy the challenge of participation.

The Christian life is often described as a race. We are instructed to ‘Run in such a way as to get the prize’ (1 Cor 9:24). That’s a bit daunting given the constant battle we have with sin weighing us down. How can we win the race, if we’re constantly stumbling and falling over?

The Bible tell us that we can’t win, not in our own strength, but we should not despair, because we can get the prize. Just like the fun run, the prize for the Christian is not found in being first. The prize goes to those who persevere, those who finish the race. The Bible says, ‘Do not throw away your confidence…You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what He has promised’ (Heb 10:35-36). Our task is to ‘run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of our faith’ (Heb 12:1-2).

Jesus is the winner. He has led all the way and waits at the finish line to share the riches of His glory with us. All we need to do is to follow in His footsteps, fixing our eyes on Him, and run to the end. Don't get distracted. Keep your eyes focused on the finish line and the Lord who has prepared an eternal home for you.
